Week Two and a bit Flying is Going to the Dogs

During the past week a flying record was broken at the airfield

A male/female pilot crew shattered the record for the most number of landings and take-offs during one day operating a Cessna 172 hired from one of the local airfield operators

Early in the record attempt, when the control tower was non-operational, the number of take-offs and landings exceeded 30 per hour!

As a matter of interest, the well-publicised flight was a fundraiser with the beneficiary of this record shattering event being the local RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), ....yeah ..the dog pound

The latest Twin Engine aircraft to make its presence felt on the airfield is an aircraft that can only be described as "THAT BIG!"

The single-seat two-cycle single-cylinder twin-engine home-built was undergoing test flying and fine engine tuning during the week with Barry Hempel as the test pilot

The "Cricket" - a Colomban MC-12 - was built by the legendary Bobby Gibbes of Papua New Guinea fame

His life in PNG after the war is well documented in the book "Sepik Pilot" by James Sinclair and is a reading "must" for all Aussie aviators

  • Bobby - now living in Collaroy NSW - was an outstanding fighter pilot during the war and was awarded the DSO and DFC with bar for his services to Australia
