Week Two
The Y2K Bug that Really Was!
AirCentre News Page Hit by "The Bug"

What some people considered to be the greatest hoax in history and the biggest fizzer and non-event of all time actually made it's presence felt and left a mark on these pages in the first week of year 2000

If you are using a web browser version 2 or earlier, then the time and date of opening this page, a Javascript feature incorporated within this web page, will not be displayed at the top of the page

The script will only execute with Java enabled Internet Explorer browser versions 3 and above; and with Netscape, version 4 and above

  • Now there were some computers (this news desk lap-top for instance) that failed to accept the Y2K and displayed instead, for some odd reason, the year 100

As a matter of interest the script had worked fine for all of 1999 on both the portable and desktop machines

To correct the date problem the Javascript program code required modification by "he who is skilled(?)" in fiddling with the software code to accept the new year

  • So there you go, this Y2K Bug thing really wasn't a hoax after all!

But it leads up to another current aviation safety issue

As you are aware by now CASA in their wisdom only approve an "Organisation" if their IT system is "Y2K Compliant"

  • Should they have also included as a result of this evidence any lap-top or similar computer used by aviators to access weather and NOTAM's on the WWW?

The News Desk can only ponder about the ramifications!  Let me think about this for an hour or two ...zzZZzzzZZ
