Two F/A-18's Lost in Training

 October 19 
Two USA F/A-18F Super Hornets went down 129kms southwest of Monterey during a training flight with the loss of four military personnel

The Super Hornets appear to have collided in mid-air during manoeuvres with 6 other F/A-18F's from the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 41 based at Lemoore Naval Air Station in California

The Lemoore Naval Air Station is one of three operational Strike Fighter Squadrons utilising the F/A-18F dual seat fighters

Russian Rocket Explodes

 October 17 
A Soyuz-U rocket, with a Photon-M satellite on top, blew up 16 seconds after lift-off from Russia's Plesetsk military cosmodrome

   "The satellite had been scheduled to make a 15-day voyage around Earth carrying scientific experiments for the European Space Agency, the United States, Canada, Indonesia and Japan"

Rocket debris fell into a nearby forest killing one person and injuring eight others on the ground - the Soyuz design has been used since 1963 including manned launches
