Report - Flying is Safe in OZ

November 7
A report released by the Government's ATSB - which covers aviation safety for the year 2002 - found that here in OZ flying is "extremely safe" compared to overseas

The report found that over the last 10 year period there was a significant increase in the RPT hours flown - up 30% - and passengers carried up 41%

General aviation remained "flat", - however there was a significant increase in the safety aspect with fatal accidents declining from 1.6 per 100K departures to just 0.8 in 2002

Archerfield is still last for aircraft movements at the 5 GAAP aerodromes mentioned in the report

November 27 Airspace Changes

November 1
Media reports have OZ's air traffic controllers meeting in the "Apple Isle" discussing if any strike action will be necessary over the National Airspace System on 27/11/03

"They say the system means light aircraft will not need to maintain radio contact with air traffic control"

News Desk Comment
Ever since radio comms in light aircraft became the norm in the 60's there has been arguments for and against compulsory use away from airports

"..small aircraft that are operating within the zones where major airlines operate are required to carry transponders" and to listen out for traffic
