Queenslanders Honour Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen in State Funeral
Kiwi Fairchild Metro 111 Freighter Lost in Unusual Circumstances

May 2
The Queensland Government has honoured the former Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen by a State Funeral held in Sir Joh's home town of Kingaroy

Sir Joh was instrumental in using and supporting light aircraft for use in Government and private operations during his time in the top job running the State - the longest for any QLD Premier

Joh also supported a number of Air Races in the State during his reign - click HERE for the 1970 Queensland Warana Air Race Welcome

In the mid '80's Joh offered financial and Government support for the Hinkler Bicentennial Air Race that was held in 1988 and raised over $120,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Click to Enlarge A Kiwi Airworks operated Fairchild Metro 111 freighter loaded with courier cargo and enroute from Auckland to Blenheim crashed under suspicious circumstances around 2215hrs local about 5km east of Stratford

Click to Enlarge Indications from TV images suggest the twin turbo-prop may have been carrying out an emergency descent and trying to land - the undercarriage was down and appears to be in the locked position

Media reports have the freighter at 22,000 feet when it "exploded"
