Safety Standards Breached at Archerfield - Pilots Challenge Government

August 1  2007
The News Desk has been advised of a submission to the OZ Government outlining recently changed safety 'buffer' zones and the decline of safety standards for aircraft operating into and out-of Brisbane's Archerfield Airport - QLD's only secondary airport and one of six in OZ

A number of Archerfield based pilots had become concerned over the reduction of airside run-off and over-run areas being infringed by newly constructed buildings situated too close to the main runway and taxiway complex as well as a dangerous road that had been built only a few metres from the end of the one and only 'all weather' runway

The Archerfield Airport Chamber of Commerce - a group consisting of mainly aircraft owners and pilots - were able to establish after a prolonged 2-year investigation that there were a number of safety infringements and other issues where "profits were placed ahead of safety requirements"

News Desk Comment
Reducing the 'buffer zone' area allocated for errors - pilot or air-controller generated - weather related or mechanical malfunction - is fraught with danger and risks the lives of all who fly in light aircraft - flying is safe as long as the standards set from experiences of the past are maintained

Severe Weather Claims Twin-Engine Aircraft and Two Lives in Victoria's North

August 1  2007
Local Victorian police have located the wreckage of a twin-engine aircraft about 60km north of Melbourne around 2200hrs Tuesday night - the Aero Commander 500 had departed Essendon airport earlier and was en-route to Shepparton when it impacted high ground in the area

Apparently the weather bureau had issued a severe weather warning for western and central districts of Victoria - including the crash site - before the aircraft departed Essendon - the 34-year-old female pilot and her 50-year-old male passenger from Cairns - both employees of General Aviation Maintenance - did not survive
