A 42 year-old warbird enthusiast was killed on his first solo flight of his P-51D Mustang - Lou IV - at Camarillo California when the machine 'bounced' on landing and overturned

Media reports indicate ...the pilot had been flying with an instructor just prior to the accident the instructor disembarked from the aircraft and notified the tower that the pilot "was doing his first solo flight"

Single-engine aircraft of around 1400 hp require different techniques in the engine handling department than the more normal category aircraft - applying power after a landing 'bounce' requires delicate application of power whilst maintaining directional control and flying airspeed

The massive torque generated by these enormous V12's can induce a 'torque-roll' if the airspeed is low - applying power too quickly will have the aircraft inverted in an instant
