Launch of Glider by Winch and Cable near Goulburn turns Fatal

September 2  2007
The NSW Police Department have advised media of a fatal glider crash which resulted in the death of a 64-year-old man at Towrang near Goulburn

The two men aboard the 2-seat sailplane were from Queanbeyan - an instructor and student pilot - and undergoing a winch launch (as an alternative to aircraft tug) to get airborne when the glider ..."spiralled to the ground"

A 68-year-old man been transferred to the Canberra Hospital with serious leg injuries after ambulance crews initially took him to the Goulburn Base Hospital

News Desk Comment
Winch launching of gliders is a significantly cheaper way to get airborne than by using an aircraft - but has a higher risk component if the wire cable snaps on the initial launch
