SIXTY WARTIME SPITFIRES LOCATED IN PRISTINE CONDITION IN BURMA

A UK farmer and aviation enthusiast - 62-year-old David Cundall - has located a hoard of Spitfires that were buried in crates at 3-different locations in Burma in 1945

Initial indications suggest that the Spitfires are Mark XIV types and may have been fitted with the rare Rolls Royce Griffon engine of around 2,375hp possibility with counter-rotating propellers

The burial places were confirmed with the use of ground radar and remote-controlled cameras inserted into the crates through boreholes - they were waxed and wrapped in greased paper and had their joints tarred to protect against decay

"The Burmese Government has signed an agreement with the British farmer to allow for the excavation..."

A 50-year-old father along his 13-year-old son were flying from Mansfield in Victoria's north-east heading for Moorabbin airport when the motor-glider they were in had an apparent engine problem that forced a emergency landing in a paddock

The pair were from the Melbourne eastern suburb of Canterbury

"...the pilot encountered problems with his engine over Healesville just after 4pm (AEDT) and made the emergency landing in a paddock at Bangholme"

Both escaped with minor injuries when during the emergency landing the glider flipped over after contacting long grass in the paddock
